Texas Stream Team (TST) Regions
Overview of Parameters
Trained TST citizen scientists collect data on various water quality parameters to assist communities, government agencies, businesses and industries, and educational organizations in promoting informed natural resource management decisions. These parameters are:
- Water and Air Temperature
- Dissolved Oxygen (DO)
- Total Dissolved Solids and Conductivity
- Water Clarity
- Field Observations
TST citizen scientists with advanced training can collect data on additional water quality parameters, such as:
- E. Coli Bacteria
- Water Turbidity
- Streamflow Calculations
Volunteers submit their data to the TST program directly or through their designated TST partner organization. All monitoring forms are reviewed upon entry to assure the data meets the requirements set by an approved Quality Assurance Protection Plan (QAPP).
All data that meets the requirements of the QAPP are sent to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) database to be used as a supplement to professionally collected data. TCEQ uses of approved TST data include:
- Comparison with Water Quality Standards
- Trend Analyses
- Identifying Water Quality Conditions and Concerns Requiring TCEQ Action
- Use as Baseline Information in the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) Development Process
All TST volunteer data are available to the public via the Waterways Dataviewer.
Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP)
A QAPP outlines the procedures a monitoring project use to ensure that all samples and data are of high enough quality to meet program standards. By adhering to these procedures, TST program personnel and citizen scientists ensure QAPP-approved data can be used for functions including educational purposes, research, best management practice (BMP) effectiveness, and any other uses deemed appropriate by resource managers and TCEQ.
